Wives-Mothers-Daughters-Widows: Cornish Women in the Caribbean from the 17th to 19th Centuries

Wives - Mothers - Daughters - Widows is the first book to examine the lives of the Cornish women - female indentured servants, the wives of mariners, miners, and missionaries, and ‘ladies of quality’ - who, for many different reasons, spent time in the Caribbean.

What people are saying ...

There has been a gathering tide of research and literature into the lives of Cornish women in recent years but, so far, less work has concentrated on the women of the Cornish diaspora, so this new book is a very welcome addition to that literature - Dr Lesley Trotter, Honorary Research Fellow, Institute of Cornish Studies, University of Exeter - June 2024.

I think it's a really valuable book and a good companion to the earlier one (The 'earlier one' is The Cornish in the Caribbean', first published in 2019, and now available in paperback) - Professor Bridget Brereton, Professor Emerita, University of the West Indies - August 2024.

Sue Appleby skillfully breaks new ground in telling the stories of Cornish women who lived in the Caribbean whom history books covering the period largely ignore. I greatly enjoyed reading this successor to Appleby's 'The Cornish in the Caribbean' - it's text is supported by profuse illustrations and backed by a comprehensive bibliography. I commend it to anyone interested in the lives of the Cornish diaspora - Peter Moll, Tortola, British Virgin Islands - August 2025.
